"When a proposal for Magnum Stories was first circulated to Magnum photographers in 1995, in the lead up to one of its members' meetings, Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004), unable to personally attend the meeting, forwarded a note stating: 'I would like to stress my point of view: I have never been a storyteller. Even when I had assignments, it was a pretext to keep a photographic diary, as I never believed in the truth of the five tables of the law of photojournalism: Who, what, when, where, why. I would like my photographs to be published with this text."
为什么HCB会否认5W? 再往下看:
"It was indeed an emotional experience for me when I sold my first photograph to the French magazine Vu. .. But sometimes, unhappily, they distort them. The magazine can publish exactly what the photographer wanted to show, but the photographer runs the risk of letting himself be moulded by the taste or the requirements of the magazine."
原来如此。或许如HCB所说,他自己是一个anarchist,是一个lived day by day and only ever did what he wanted, never working for magazines but only for himself的自由人,仅仅把摄影作为一种"instant drawing",去记录外在世界。所以他说, "to me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression."
